Life can Change in an Instant

Imagine you are young and super excited about your life. You are healthy, in great physical condition, smart, musical, charismatic, and a rising 1st class (senior) at the United States Coast Guard Academy. Now imagine you are flying down a hill on a long skateboard with your friends, feeling both exhilarated and invincible.  That is the last feeling you remember until you regain consciousness… two months later!

This is Duncan Quinn’s story, and I spoke with him about his recovery on my show (link below).  Duncan has definitely proven to have a high AQ (Adversity Quotient which is defined by the ability to overcome horrible things).  Through a long 2 years of rehab, Duncan managed to maintain both hope and a sense of humor. Besides his own unwavering commitment to his recovery, he also had other advantages: 1. He got immediate and excellent medical care.  2. He was young and in excellent condition.  3. He had many connections, and his family and friends were very supportive and able to visit him. All were important in his returning to a somewhat normal life.

His life is not as it was. He lost his vision in one eye (he cannot drive). His left hand is not functional (he can no longer play his beloved ukulele).  In spite of all of the lingering deficits, Duncan is still able to laugh, figure out ways to support others, and graduate from college. I hope his story inspires you.
